Integrating the Primary Health Care Approach into a Medical Curriculum: a programme logic model

James Hamilton Irlam, Mpoe Johannah Keikelame, Lauraine Margaret Vivian

Abstract

The Primary Health Care (PHC) Approach was adopted by the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Cape Town (UCT) in 1994 as a policy to guide its teaching, research, clinical service, and community engagement.
The PHC Approach has been developed as the “Lead Theme” of transformed health sciences curricula for multi-professional learning in the Faculty over the past decade.
A programme logic model for monitoring and evaluating sub-themes of the PHC Lead Theme in the medical (MBChB) curriculum is presented. The sub-themes of Culture, Psyche and Illness (CPI); Health Promotion (HP); and Evidence-based Practice (EBP) are described.
